Parangikaai Paal Kootu (Red Pumpkin Curry)

Ingredients: 1. Yellow Pumpkin- 1/2 kg (Peeled and cut into small cubes). 2. Grated coconut- 4 tbsp 3. Cumin seeds- 1 tbsp 4. Green chillies-4 5. Turmeric powder- 1/2 tbsp 6. Milk- 1/2 glass 7. Salt as required To saute: 1. Mustard seeds-1/2 tbsp 2. Channa dhal- 1/2 tbsp 3. Curry leaves- little. How to make this yummy curry? This is a Kerala dish and I learnt this from my mom. It tastes little Srilankan too. Boil, the pumpkin cubes, adding turmeric powder and 1/2 glass water and little salt. When the pumpkin has cooked, add the finely ground mixture of coconut, cumin seeds, green chillies and cook for another 5 minutes. Then, add milk and cook in slow flame until it becomes little thick. Add little oil to sauting pan, and add mustard, curry leaves and channa dhal. Add the sauted mixture to the pumpkin mixture. This is a side dish for rice.

Poosanikaai Kootu (Winter Melon Kootu).

This is a simple kootu. 1. Winter melon- cut into small cubes 2. Channa dhal- 2 tbsp 3. Grated coconut-4 tbsp 4. Cumin seeds- 1/2 tbsp 5. Green or red chillies- 3 6. Turmeric powder-1/2 tbsp 7. Salt- as required 8. To saute: Oil, Mustard and curry leaves. Boil winter melon and channa dhal, with 1 glass of water Add turmeric powder and let the winter melon get cooked. Grind coconut, cumin seeds, chillies and add this paste and let this cook well. Add salt. Saute with mustard and curry leaves

Karunaikizhangu Masiyal - கருணைக்கிழங்கு மசியல்

I am not sure on its exact English name, but its a kind of Yam. (Picture Credit- Dinakaran.com) This cures Piles. This can cause itchy feeling in the tongue. When you buy it from Indian stores, check and make sure that the yam is not soft. Cut them into two. Use the water that you got from rinsing the rice and pressure cook for 3 whistles. Then, in a pan add 1-2 tbsp of oil, mustard seeds, some curry leaves. Once they start splattering, add 1-2 chopped green chillies, 1/2 tbsp of turmeric and add the cooked &mashed yam. Add 1 glass of water and mix well. All this will mix and start boiling. Add salt and mix well. After switching off the stove, add lemon juice of 1 full lemon. Brinjal Rasawangi

This is another famous dish in Tamilnadu, that can be eaten with Rice. 1. Fry one handful of Dhania, 1 handful of channa dhal and 4-5 red chillies, 1 handful of coconut in a dry pan. (until it turns hot). 2. Grind the above, adding lil water. 3. Boil, brinjal pieces (cut into small cubes), 1 handful of channa dhal, and tamarind juice (1 small lemon size), 1/2 tbsp of turmeric powder. 4. Once the vegetable is cooked, add the grounded mixture and add salt. 5. Saute with curry leaves and mustard seeds. You can serve this with Rice/Pongal.

Malabar Vellarikaai Molagootal...

All of us know cucumber, but there is a brown skinned- cucumber, coming from places like Kerala. This is called Malabar Cucumber and this is available in Singapore. How to make Molagootal( Kootu) with this: 1. Peel the Malabar cucumber, remove the seed side portion and cut into small cubes. 2. Pressure cook one handful of Toor dhal 3.Cook the Malabar cucumber, adding lil turmeric. 4. Grind 3-4 tbsp of grated cocount, 3-4 green chillies, 1 tbsp of cumin and the cooked toor dhal and add to this malabar cucumber. 5. Add salt and let all this boil together 6. Saute with Mustard and curry leaves. This one goes well with rice. You can try it with pickles like Aavakkai

Molageezhiyam (yes, thats how its called.. another mellu recipe)

1. Raw banana- 1. Peeled and cut into small cubes 2. Moong dhal- 1 handful 3. Pepper powder- 1tbsp. Procedure: 1. Boil Moong dhal, in water. Once its half cooked, add the raw banana and add salt and let this cook 2. Now, add pepper powder and curry leaves. Once its boiled, switch off and serve.

Olan... (Nyan mellu)

1. Cut winter Melon (Poosanikaai) into thin small sizes. 2. Boil handful of Moongdhal and water. 3. Once the moongdhal is half cooked, add winter melon, split green chillies and let this cook. 4. Add half the quantity of salt while the melon and moongdhal are getting cooked. 5. Add a glass of milk. (now sim it only for few mins.. else taste will change). Saute with coconut oil, curry leaves and mustard.

Malabar Special..Molagootal

"This is another traditional kerala item Vegetables that can be used for this: Spinach or Carrot/Cabbage or Chow-Chow Basic Ingredients: 1 cup grated coconut, 3-4 green chillies, 1 tbsp of cumin seeds Grind all basic ingredients in a mixie adding water. Boil all the vegetables, add the grounded mixture. Cook 1 cup of Toor dhal in the pressure cooker for 3 whistles. Add salt and cooked toor dhal. This can be mixed with rice and served with pickle. "
